don't take it the wrong way, GWG is locked, by no default of their pwn, into the current situation. If I were an Aion user, I would come here and post(get things done FTW!?), before doing so on the Aion board. Guild wars users are just being concerned about the well being of their accounts, and it seems rightfully so as -most- of the posts rolling in now have no affiliation with Aion just NCsoft. it's kinda clear what the 3rd parties are after though. isn't it?
Given ANet's stance on using fansites for official communication, I should just direct everyone to the wiki, which is (according to them) the one real way of communication.

I don't really know why anyone from Aion would come to a GW forum to get anything accomplished. If I played Aion got an email like this and was worried about it, I'd contact NCsoft support. *shrugs*

that's just the thing. it seems like -most- of these people DON'T play Aion, but should still be contacting NCsoft support err....maybe Anet. I dunno. I guess the need to spread the word is powerful, hence the posts rolling in.

There are already threads on the Aion forums concerning account security.

People need to be talking to NCsoft, since Anet doesn't really have anything to do with Aion. I don't go to my mechanic when I have a headache, I go to my doctor.

*more shrugging*

Default Another email to lookout for

Interestingly enough, I just had an issue with support at NCSoft and got my issue resolved. Then suddenly received this strangely worded email:

Quote:
[email protected]
NCsoft Support [[email protected]]
To: undisclosed-recipients:

Someone XX.XXX.XX.XXX Aion has been reset to your game account password. If you do not make this change, please do not hesitate in supporting http :// www support-ncsoft com
Obviously, I spread the url out so that it wouldn't be auto-linked in my post. It is definitely an attempt to get personal information. I apologize if this has been brought up before (didn't find it here anywhere). I just thought it important to bring this to everyone's attention with all the hacking and account-stealing mess going on lately. If you get this email, ignore it!

A quick "whois" lookup on the link address returns this information:

If you get this email, don't stress, just delete it. They just want you to click the link. It doesn't mean you've been hacked. I logged into my account after seeing it and everything was fine. And to the originator of the email, all I can say is "nice try". LOL

Have a great weekend

Ahh, so they can't change the passwords of the accounts they randomly log on to @ plaync website.
But they can read your email adress, so they're trying to be creative.
Where else would they get these adresses? I think this shows plaync is still wide open.

The guys who got this email can probably call themselves lucky then, a week ago you would have lost all your shit instead.

I receive about 3-5 E-Mails a day from "Blizzard" asking for my WoW.. everything? My name, surname, where I live, CD-Key, information, all of it... I don't have a WoW account, or ever associated one with my e-mail T_T.

I guess the rage has finally hit Guild Wars/NCSoft, too. Wonderful :P
If you ever get an e-mail from "NCSoft" then it's probably a fake. They don't usually send e-mails, they send messages to your personal NCSoft account.

When you see horrible grammar and strange phraseology in these types of emails, you can be assured it's a Chinese phishing attempt.

Guess I'm safe since I don't even use the internet in Windows for anything but steam and guildwars

Mac OS X + iPod Touch all the way.

I love loading malicious sites in Firefox on OSX all the time and watching it say shit like ".exe is an unknown type of executable file, cannot continue"

Oh, I know the threats are still there in Windows either way, you don't need to hint me on that.

I am not worried about anything.

Make no mistake, these threats are real. I deal with them for a living from users at the company I work for as a network admin.

People get "hacked" because they CLICK without scrutiny. And I'm not just talking about emails from fake ncsoft sites. Take MySpace, for example. People LOVE to "pimp" up their myspace page. Hackers KNOW THIS. They put together a site with all kinds of cool stuff they know people are looking for. How many times have you gone to one of these things and found that you had to put your login information (with password by the way) in order for them to add this cool new content to your myspace page? Oh and the classic... TOOLBARS. Oh my god, I had one client who had like 4 toolbars in his internet explorer. He didn't know how they got there. They got there because when he installed something else, he didn't bother to read and uncheck the boxes to install that crap. As a result, his PC runs like crap because it's bogged down with "trashware" he doesn't even need.

So you don't surf the internet in Windows? What about email, do you check email? In 90% of the spyware infested PC's I've cleaned, it originally started from a link or attachment in an email. In some of those cases, it was a script that ran as soon as the user OPENED the email. Yeah, scary stuff isn't it?

Let's talk common sense here boys and girls... First off, pay attention to what you click. That is the number one rule in avoiding spyware, crapware, viruses, phishing sites, etc... Look, my computers never have spyware or viruses. Why? Because of that one simple rule. Secondly, turn off that stupid preview pane in Outlook, and never open emails from someone you're not familiar with. Delete them immediately! Stop forwarding lists, jokes, chain letters, and that other crap too... those things are notorious for carrying worms and scripts. Every time you forward one of those, think about the chance you're taking... possibly infecting one of your friends' computers without even realizing it.

Oh, and my favorite.... people always blame Windows. I love this one. It isn't Windows fault people, its your fault. Think about it... they like to say that MAC and Linux are more secure. Not true. In fact, you'll be lucky if Apple sends out an update for a security hole within 2 months of finding it. At least Microsoft answers threats quickly and honestly. Windows gets blamed because Windows is a hacker's favorite target. Why? Because everyone uses Windows! Larger pool of possible dummies that might click their little spyware installer.

Look, I'm no expert here, and I don't pretend to know everything about spyware, hackers, and email worms. But I can tell you after spending the last 12 years working in an IT department in a worldwide company, I've seen enough to know a thing or two. So, at the very least, follow that one rule... be skeptical. NCSoft people use fairly good grammar in their emails, at least in my experience they have. I knew that email was a fake right away just by the return address. If a link in an email looks suspicious to you, simply copy the link and search google: "whois www.google.com" (using google as an example). If it's a legitimate site, you'll see all the contact info, proper email address contacts, mailing addresses, even phone numbers for who registered the name. Download and install a free program called MALWAREBYTES. It is the best spyware cleaner I've ever used (we use it in our company to remove many). It's so good in fact, that some spyware, if the user has gone far enough to actually click something and get it installed, will block it from running. (this is easily circumvented by renaming the executable of course). www.malwarebytes.org check it out. Also, install and update Windows Defender. It's come a LONG way in the last year. And best of all it's also free! Finally, if you want a great all-around virus/spyware scanner that you can actually buy, try Vipre, www.sunbeltsoftware.com (I'm not advertising for these people, but it's such a great antivirus, our company just purchased the Enterprise version).

I check email mostly in osx or my iPod. I honestly respect you seeing as you are some sort of IT guy but seriously. I've had to reinstall windows to remedy problems from viruses or problems on more then one pc 10 times in the 3 years I've owned my mac. I had to reinstall osx once and that was when I upgraded my hdd. So how secure is osx? IMO it's pretty damn secure.

That doesn't mean it's more secure. People who create these viruses and spyware don't target OSX because there are WAY more people using Windows that they can target. Hence, my comment about "more possible dummies to click on stuff". MAC's day is coming, trust me. So is Linux. Especially if they keep getting more popular with common users (more people using them instead of Windows). At one time, the statistics showed 82% of computer users in the world were using Windows. I'm not sure how much that number has changed now, but I'd guess it's probably around 70% or so by now. The lower that percentage gets, the more likely you will start seeing the same kind of stuff happening to MAC and Linux users.

10 times in 3 years? My god man, what are you doing? LOL... Seriously, when XP came out, I upgraded and haven't looked back. I've had maybe 3 viruses in that time. XP released in 2001, so thats 3 viruses in 9 years.

Hello everyone. I've heard when people in Kamadan are Recruiting, "XXXXXXX" guy says he wanna join. He asks for your email when he's in guild, with reason to stay in contact. Then he starts sending emails with his FAKE Anet email to you with reason you have to post your Email & Password for verification, otherwise you're getting permanently banned.
